| | Golf etiquette is really about making the game of golf safer and more pleasant for all the players, most players will be only too pleased to help a beginner learn.
Safety Never hit your ball until you're sure that other players are out of reach. If you do make a wild shot and the ball is heading for someone make sure you call out 'Fore' to warn them. Never swing a club when it could hit another player, and never take a practice shot in another player's direction - the club could strike a loose stone which could hit them.
Pace of Play Always avoid slow play - this doesn't mean you have to rush your game - you can take the time you need for your shot - it's more about not wasting time between shots. On the tee be ready with a ball, tee and club so you can take your shot as soon as the course is clear and it's your turn. The correct etiquette is for the player who won the last hole to take the first shot on the next tee but it's often a good idea to play 'ready golf' to save time i.e whoever's ready to go goes first. Remember - you should be playing to keep up with the group in front, not to keep in front of the group behind. Leave the green as soon as everyone in the group has putted out - don't stand on the green marking cards
Respecting Other Players Don't disturb another player taking a shot, golf is as much a mental as a physical game and concentration is vital. If you talk or move around when someone's taking a shot you'll disrupt their concentration. However players vary enormously in how much noise and movement affect them, if you play with the same people you'll soon find a level that suits everyone.
On the Green Don't walk across the line between another player's ball and the hole - the disturbed grass could make their ball roll in an unexpected direction. Be aware of where your shadow is and don't stand so it lies across another player's line to the hole. This is especially important when tending the flag. Be careful where you lay the pin down , if you place it on the green too close to the hole and a player's ball strikes it they will get 2 penalty points. The safest place is outside the green. Keep a pitch repairer in your pocket and repair any pitch marks you make - it's also good practice to repair other pitch marks you see on the green. | |
