Golf for the Beginner

An article from Used Golf Clubs and Golf Bags
How to get Started. Golf can be very intimidating to the beginner - learning how to hit the ball, the whole business of joining a golf club, people talking an incomprehensible language, spectators as you take a shot - but it's not so difficult if you take it a step at a time.

First step - Take Lesson. Yes, you could buy a set of golf clubs and go out and play a game but the chances are you'll be so disillusioned you'll never do it again. Much better to take it slowly. Find a golf professional you can get on with - if you can't get recommendations from a friend then go to a golf club and book a taster lesson. Don't expect to be able to play like a pro after half a dozen lessons - it takes time and lots of practice. A good golf pro will start at the beginning and take it step by step - it may take several lessons just to get the grip correct. Keep practicing and you will gradually improve.

Practice as much as you can. Especially after a lesson to make sure you've understood what you've been taught. You need to get to the point where your body and muscles know what to do without you thinking about it - that takes a lot of hitting balls. Find a golf range to practice in and try not to worry what other people are thinking, everyone started out where you are and you'll find even experienced golfers there struggling to hit a ball as they try out what they've been taught in their latest lesson. When you feel ready go out on a par 3 course, they are made for learning and much less intimidating than a full 18 hole course.

Don't forget there's more to the game of golf than hitting the ball off the tee. You'll need to learn the other techniques like pitching, chipping and putting, again lessons from a pro on the short game are invaluable.

If you've been having lessons, playing the par 3 and going to the range you'll have got to know people at the golf club and joining will be far less intimidating. Playing in competitions, expecially getting used to playing with other people will all help to improve your game.
